The Best Vegan and Vegetarian Eateries in Budapest

Eating healthy food while on the road should not be an issue anymore. Everyone knows that vegan and vegetarian restaurants can be found more and more often, so Budapest is no exception. We have composed a list of the 10 best restaurants, cafés, salad bars and even confectioneries around Budapest for all of those who lead a healthier and more humane life. So once you catch your airport transfers from the Budapest airport to the city, head to one of these places and boost your energy.

Napos oldal Restaurant

The Napos oldal restaurant is located at Jókai Street in the city center, claiming to serve the best breaded seitan of Budapest, with an additional selection of sugar-free desserts.

They also have a variety of breakfast options, such as a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, freshly squeezed beetroot-carrot-apple juice, vegan café latte, and other great morning starters. Napos oldal (or “Sunny side”) comes with a bio shop, where you can buy reform ingredients to make your favorite meals at home.

Govinda Vegetarian Restaurant and Salad Bar

Head to Vigyázó Ferenc Street, where you will find the Govinda Restaurant. The place is known for its lacto-vegetarian delicacies and traditional Indian flavors, since they prepare all dishes with clean and fresh ingredients, mostly grains, plant-parts and dairy products. The recipes and preparation methods follow the ancient Vedic tradition, resulting in juicy, filling, and non-fattening dishes. The restaurant welcomes the visitors with Indian dhals, sabjis and special sauces.

Napfényes Restaurant

This is the most popular alternative restaurant in the city, reachable at Rózsa Street, where every meal is prepared with plant-based ingredients that don’t contain any animal protein or alcohol. Besides the vegetarians, vegans can also find something delicious on the menu as well. The restaurant is popular for its incredible spelt pizzas with versatile toppings, tasting absolutely amazing.

Fruccola

Fruccola is a true green zone on the Budapest’s gastro-map. Located at both Kristóf Square and Arany János Street, you can combine filling salads from fresh ingredients in their salad bar section, or enjoy freshly squeezed juices, bio elixirs and coffees. The Fruccola is one of the most popular breakfast places among the residents, since this environmentally friendly restaurant has something for everyone. It is not an exclusively vegan or vegetarian place, and they offer a few meat options.

Vegan Love

Fighting against the biggest myth that vegetarians need to give up on pleasurable dishes, like burgers, the Vegan Love place at Bartók Béla Road serves amazing meat-free burgers, which can be really addictive. They have trademark creations like BBQ tofu burgers in spelt, pumpkin-seed buns with smoked tofu steak, sweet potato burger with roasted zucchini, beetroot-radish cream and salad, curry lentil burger, quinoa burgers, vegan chili dogs and million variations of these meals.

Nemsüti

The repertoire at Nemsüti (or “Non-cookie”) is based around sandwiches, salads, sandwich creams and freshly squeezed juices, so you can swap your big dinner for a nice sandwich meal. Found at both Jásza Mari Square and Hold Street, here you can order hot, cold, whole grain, pita sandwiches with paprika cream, aubergine cream, spinach cream, hummus, and other seasonal creams. They purchase ingredients from the best places, and adjust the menu to seasonal vegetables and fruits.

Zsolnay Café

The café can be reached in the Radisson Blu Béke Hotel Superior at Teréz Boulevard, and comes out with a new dessert menu every year. They welcome dessert lovers with different flavors and shape formats annually, usually a few, all telling different stories to the visitors. The desserts are wheat flour- and lactose-free, made without the use of added sugar, being a perfect healthy dessert.

Édes Élet Confectionery

The Édes Élet confectionery can be found in the 13th District at Pannónia Street and is preparing gluten-, sugar-, dairy- and egg-free sweets, using plant-based ingredients, claiming that their desserts are true to the traditions. Édes Élet (or “Sweet Life”) uses sesame seed, coconut and rice flour instead of regular flour, uses xylitol instead of sugar, and coconut or almond instead of cow milk. The most popular desserts are the vanilla-chocolate cake, raspberry-walnut cake and the black forest cake.

Naspolya Nassolda

The Naspolya Nassolda on Káldy Gyula Street uses dried fruits as sweeteners in their desserts, and they don’t use artificial sugars or chemically “clean” milk or flour. They just focus to find tasty, good quality fruit producers. They prepare their desserts in a special workshop without baking, so that they stay rich in vitamins, nutrients and enzymes. The menu has cakes, pies, cookies, different snacks and special almond milk that is freshly made every morning.

Napfényes Restaurant and Confectionary

Those who wish to live healthy, but also love the traditional flavors, will all find their hopes at Napfényes Restaurant and Confectionary at Ferenciek Square. Their delicacies are made from plant-based ingredients and are most suitable for people struggling with diabetes. They are most popular for their homemade ice cream, also suitable for those who have food allergies, since the scone is made from spelt flour.
