History of the Castle Hill

The first citizens arrived in the 13th century after the Mongolian invasion in 1241 and 1242. The hills of Buda was a protection against the Mongolian corpses. The golden age of Castle Hill was in the 15th century, during the reign of King Matthias Corvinus (Mathias Rex). The king married to Beatrix of Naples in 1476, who was accompanied by Italian artists and craftsmen. At this time Buda was an important European city. After the 150 year long Turkish occupation of Hungary Buda was in ruins. The city was rebuilt in baroque style and the Castle District gave place to many of the governmental institutes. In 1944 Adolf Hitler declared Budapest a fortress city (Festung Budapest). During the winter of 1944-1945 Budapest was bombed to the ground by the Russian Red Army. The castle district was in ruins again and must have been rebuilt again. At some houses you can still see the sign of bullets.

Today, Castle Hill is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your best option is to wander around the cobblestone streets and discover Castle Hill at your own pace. Exploring the small streets, you will feel you're in a different world.
